Today we have a mix of cultures that came together beautifully in one amazing celebration. Randhi is Sri Lankan, and Tim is American and they tied the knot with a traditional Poruwa ceremony held outdoors, at the Green Valley Ranch Amphitheater.
Their wedding contained tradition, family, tasty food, and lots of dancing! Prepare for some rich hues, dancers, drummers and rituals – so many things to love about it.
Randhi’s aunt is a Sari maker in Sri Lanka. Not only she custom made Randhi’s gorgeous white and gold embellished sari, she also made the bridesmaids coral and gold saris as well. The set of jewelry that adorned the bride from head to waist was hand made and brought directly from Sri Lanka for the wedding.
Tim was escorted to the ceremony by a procession of dancers and the beat of the drums. Following so, Randhi and her family were escorted by dancers down the red carpet and then led to the marriage platform called the Poruwa. Three dancers in white, known as the jayamangala gatha, come to bless the marriage before the officiant initiates the ceremony.
The ceremony is made up of an array of rituals symbolizing their transition to the next stage of life together. It includes dropping of betel leaves, tying the little fingers and pouring water over the couple’s hands, exchanging rings, handing out gifts and the singing of a series of chants. To end the ceremony a coconut is broken, and an oil lamp is lit, symbolizing good luck, and a new start.
The reception was held at Green Valley Ranch’s Grand Ballroom. The renowned Channa Upuli dancers, who came all the way from Sri Lanka, provided delightful entertainment. For their second grand entrance, Randhi changed into a white gown while Tim went for a tuxedo and they later hit the dance floor for their confetti-filled first dance. And nothing better to finish the night than seeing everyone having a great time on the dance floor.
Randhi did the amazing task of planning all of the event herself while finishing medical school. A huge thanks to Rissa and her talented team at Scheme Events, who were in charge of the day of coordination.
Congratulations to you both and lots of love your way!
